At the age of 65, the Swedish legend, with 11 Slams won in his career, was on vacation in Sicily and could not resist the courts of the local tennis club, wowing fans.
the charm of Taormina and a living tennis legend like bjorn borg, a truly original combination. Myths that meet and cross, and this time the place of the apparition not the suggestive Greco-Roman theater but the Taormina Sporting Club with its fields of red clay.
known that Taormina, the pearl of the Ionian, un tourism symbol of level international, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner (just to name a few stars of world cinema history) have paraded through its historic center. On the hill of Mount Taurus there the visible archaeological signs of ancient Magna Graeciaand landscapes of sublime beauty: in the East the Ionian Sea volcano and Etna in the south.
In the last season there is a place with a greater VIP presence, and the club managed by the Taormina Sporting Club, where these days materialized a living legend of tennis: Borg.
This is the same tennis club that in 2020 saw the presence of the richest man in Europe (and among the richest on the planet) bernard arnault, in front of the giant LVMH. Arnault, fascinated by Taormina, stayed there and played tennis on the clay courts. In the past it was a place where they could meet Giacinto Facchetti and Fred Bongustonow the site where Borg revealed himself. The Swede brought the tennis epic to life.some encounters with Rod Laver, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors have entered the great history of tennis.
Borg evidently can’t resist the allure and smell of clay courts.. And so on vacation in Taormina these days he has been seen at the club managed by the Sporting Club. Imagine the surprise when two tennis players from Taormina (protagonists of Serie C), recognized him. Tony Castorina and Salvatore Gallodoro couldn’t believe his eyes, it was like the realization of a dream. They had a dialogue with the great tennis player, a conversation accompanied by the inevitable photo.
Y Borg also walked through the heart of Taorminahe tasted the local cuisine, he was able to admire from above the wonderful places of the Ionian coast narrated by the writer Domenico Cacopardo, he walked the streets immortalized by great directors such as Michelangelo Antonioni.
He won it all, 11 Grand Slam titles: six at Roland Garros (courses to suit him) and 5 at Wimbledon in a row playing from the baseline on the grass surface. He managed to conquer three Grand Slam tournaments without losing a set. The list of his triumphs is too long, suffice it to say that his records still remain. He suffered from the attacking game of Adriano Panatta, the only one who could beat him twice at Roland Garros. Borg could have kept winning, but he chose to retire in 1983, at just 26 years old.
