Host of the latest episode of the Out of Character podcast, Sami Zayn spoke about his new contract with WWE signed in January.
The former Intercontinental Champion has cleared up rumors that his current contract included much of the creative control of his character, and has also explained why he felt it was right to stay with WWE.
“Let me nip this in the bud, I don’t want to act like I’m writing all my stuff, because I’m not. Trust me, it’s just a lot of very precarious stuff and they can back it up. I propose many things and some things are better than others, sometimes I throw away many ideas, there are those ideas -why, I don’t know why- that won’t work and they will tell me no. work due to different factors. But many things are going to take from these ideas and that’s fine, it’s not exactly what I imagined, but some things happen, like the documentary for example and then these ideas take on a life of their own.
I think this has led to a greater appreciation and I am pleased to have stayed here in WWE at this level. I’ll be like “hey, I really wish we could do something like that,” and then something like this happens and I’m excited, I’m over the moon. What more could you want? That’s it. It’s like someone really listens to your voice and what you have to say and when you go out there and make them feel like you feel respected and appreciated and that’s what really kept me here.
“Certainly there were other factors, but this is the main one. It was not a sudden choice, as if everything had come to an end and they said to me: ‘Hey, we really like you, where have you been the last few years?’ No no no, the last two years have shown me how much they appreciate me and how much they want me to stay and I believe them, that’s why I stayed.
After speaking about his current situation in WWE, Sami Zayn touched on his relationship with WWE writers and how much creative freedom he has in his on-screen character. Sami also revealed what it’s like to be on both sides of the coin:
“This is trust that has been earned over time. You must deserve it because there are always many willing to be heard, but not all, sometimes you are lucky enough to be heard and other times you are not, I have been on both sides, I have been in the foreground, I would say since I arrived the first times in the main roster, and then it happened once or twice when I was sitting on the sidelines and those were the only times I felt really miserable here. There is nothing worse than feeling unappreciated.
The company is not trying to screw you over and not tell you that they don’t care about you, but there are so many talented fighters and there is so much time to spend on television. It happens to just about everyone, just about everyone has it at one point or another and when you’re that guy who’s fighting with all his might to try and get on the show you feel miserable and it’s not fun.
Right now I’m at a point where I know they’re going to put me on the show, I know I can breathe easier and enjoy what I’m doing. Even if I’m doing something that’s not exactly what I dreamed of, but you know what? I’m on the show for 10 minutes tonight and I can make it as exciting as possible. I am going to enjoy it because I am in the foreground and I feel part of the team and I am helping the company and that is why I am here.
It is a subjective experience, it is not the same for everyone. The WWE experience is unique, no two people have lived it the same, all the people who have come here over the years have had different experiences. Everyone has theirs, everyone has their ups and downs; everyone has a different experience. It worked for me, but there are also times when it didn’t work for me. That’s how it goes.”
My name is Danilo, I am 27 years old, I recently graduated in Communication and I currently work as a freelance photographer. I have cultivated a strong passion for wrestling since 2004, the year in which I approached this discipline for the first time and since then I have never stopped following it. In 2019 I realized one of my biggest dreams, which is to see WrestleMania live, and I hope to do it again in the future. Currently, among my favorite fighters are Drew McIntyre (although he is tied up in embarrassing fights) and Alexa Bliss (hoping he shines again as he deserves).
